Time Magazine suggests it is ‘The Year of the Entrepreneur’, instead of waiting for a company to offer them a job; many Britons are carving out their own role. The sacrifices can be great – freelancers take fewer holidays and work longer – but the rewards are evident.

There are 4.2m people who work freelance in Britain, 14% of the nation’s workforce. The average freelancer earns £50,820 a year, almost double the average worker’s salary of £26,000.

According to an article in London’s Metro, 15% put in more than 51 hours [of work] per week, and take few holidays prompting questions that freelancers are overworked. More people wish to work in jobs outside of the traditional 9 to 5 hours; the Internet has fuelled a whole new job sector with online businesses, and the need for more flexibility in the work place due to outside responsibilities as risen.
